First Pens on a Pen Mandrel

One of my Christmas presents to myself this year was a pen mandrel so I could make some pens. Pen companies sure do make a piece of wood look good. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. The slim line pen was a practice pen. The nautical theme one is for my daughter, retired 20+ years in the Coast Guard. The bolt action is for my son, 25+ years of service and I think he's in Iraq at present.

Where did you find the Navy pen kit? I am looking for military kits. My local Woodcraft does not have them and I didn't see any on the Penn State site.

What mandrel are you using. Which is the best?

Thanks again for the compliments. dynabase the Nautical pen kit (PKNAUTAB) and the Bolt action pen (PKCP80XX) are Penn State Industries but I could have sworn I bought them at the Woodcraft Store in Norfolk, VA. I did find them on the PSI on line site by item #. I figured the nautical theme would be ok for a wide range of customers like Navy, Coast Guard, Merchant Marine and boaters. ED the mandrel (PKM-AL) was also the one from PSI because it specifically mentions that it fits a Shopsmith. The mandrell and slim line pen was from PSI online. I tried the Captain Eddie 12 cent pen on the drill bit previously but I don't have enough experience with pen mandrels to give a 2 cent opinion.

Those look GREAT. I know what you mean about making wood outstanding. I made some with Spalted Tamarind and Brazilian Brownheart turned out great.
Nice job
