I am new to the 1983 ShopSmith I bought. Plan to do pen and bowl making. Need suggestions on what headstock Chuck is best for this machine and where to purchase new and used accessories. On a limited budget. Machine is in very good condition.

Ebay Ebay Ebay. You will find just about everything you will need there, and of course there is the Mothership if you prefer new (and want to support the beast).
Look at the Nova chuck that SS sells. No expert, but I own one, and so far it is very well built.

Don't over look buying complete machines with lots of accessories and SPT's which can sometimes be bought for little more than the price of a few items you might want. Example: I bought one low hours Mark V that had the 6"x48" belt sander, a bandsaw, a jointer and a lot of smaller items. The whole thing was less than the price of the belt sander new. I have a herd of SS stuff stored back but I could have easily sold off the stuff I didn't really need for more than I spent. Another one I bought ($200) had a jointer I didn't need and I sold it and the SS manuals I didn't need for more than $200 on Ebay. Something to just keep in the back of your mind...
Warning: Buying SS's can be habit forming...

I completely agree Dick and I also have the Nova G3. It is top quality.

You could use a face plate for your bowl turning.
