Woodpeckers had Fisch (made in Austria) forstner bit sets on sale in August for December shipment. The 16 piece set was 299.99 and free shipping. That is way cheaper than anywhere else I checked. They arrived today. They look really nice and are very sharp. Testing will have to wait. We are driving to Sacramento in the morning (5AM).

I expect you will find they do a beautiful job of cutting clean perfect holes.

I got a chance to do a quick check today. They cut beautifully and produce perfect results. The wood in the picture is hard Maple. The cross grain hole is 1 5/8" and cut VERY easily. The end grain hole is also hard maple. The bit was 1 1/8". It took more pressure for the end grain hole . It was a smaller bit but I think that is still expected. FWIW the two pieces of Maple were not from the same tree. The chips were very thin like from a hand plane. I did not take a picture of them but I will and post.

I am very happy with this purchase. :D

I sprang for a set of Colt Maxi cut bits (20+ bits incl some 1/16) a couple of years ago and have never regretted the purchase. This was after 35+ years with Chinese cheapies. Wish I had done it many years ago. The Fisch bits are equal in quality to the Colts. I picked up a number of individual bits at rock bottom prices when Woodcraft changed from Colt to Fisch. You will really love those new bits!

I've been shopping for some good quality Forstner bits. The Colt MaxiCut look like the end of the search for me.

Thanks

I have a set of the Maxi Cut bits and really like them. They want to be turned at higher speeds than you might be used to for forstner bits, so pay attention to the accompanying speed information.
