I want to start making ink pens and bought a kit at Rockler. My question is
that the kit came with a mandrel with a #2 morse taper which goes on the
headstock side. What is used to mount the #2 morse taper to the headstock?? I do have a oneway talon chuck and it seems to hold the mandrel but not as well as I think it should. Is that the correct way to mount it? It seems tight. Anyone have ideas? Thanks!

Afraid that will not munt to you SS. Rather than the mt2 mount you need the SS mount. I think the SS catalog has a pen turning mandrel??..Bill..

I have the Woodcraft version of the pen mandrel and I think they are the same.
Take some nuts and put two nuts on the threaded end of the mandrel so the nuts are locked together. Then hold one of the nuts with a wrench and grab the #2 morse taper end and unscrew it from the threaded shaft.You will be able to hold the mandrel with either the Talon chuck or the drill chuck.

Welcome to the forum. I use a mandrel from penstate with an adapter also from them which fits right on the shaft on the headstock with no issues. The link below shows which one from penstate I am talking about and also the second link shows it mounted on my SS. Please excuse the rust as I also turn acrylic pens and use a wet sanding system to sand them and didn't get them cleaned up before the picture was taken. Also this particular mandrel has bushing for a 7mm slimline pen. Hope this helps.

a shopsmith 1/4" router chuck is also very good at holding the standard 7mm pen mandrel

thank you. however i must admit that it is not my own finding. i believe i heard it here last year. but i have incorporated it to my work. works very much like penn states and keeps me "shopsmith".
