Oh PERSON, not again.

Washington Examiner (Feb. 22) Purdue Online Writing Lab bans use of the word 'man'

Cautioning writers to “[avoid] using language that is stereotypical or biased in any way,” Purdue OWL describes that the general use of “man” as well as its use in professional titles is no longer considered a formal or professional writing style.

In 1974-75 when political correctness began to take root on college campuses, spreading like kudzu and destroying everything it touched, including our language, the chancellor of the Dallas County Community College District issued a mandate to all faculty and staff to use gender neutral words on campus; e.g., the chairman of a department would henceforth be called a chairperson. That chancellor was Dr. Bill Priest aka The Pope, who was not highly regarded by employees of the five member (now seven) community college district. It is presumed his persondate (gender neutral) was issued ex cathedra.

The following day a sign on the door to the office of the chairman of the social studies department had been changed. It no longer read, “Herman Dettman, Chairman – Social Studies" but, reflecting the wishes (demands) of the Pope now read, “PersonPerson, DettPerson, Chairperson". No one admitted to making the change although Herman had a wry sense of humor so most likely he was the culprit and would have been excommunicated if proof had been found.

Oh let us just neuter every person and this 'problem' will die out!

The remaining beings really do not make such stupid mountains out of pimples(or try to remove them).

Choosing to use gender-neutral terms is generally a good thing. Twisting yourself in a pretzel in order to do so isn't.

I suspect the Washington Examiner erred when it used the word "ban" in its headline. The next sentence doesn't sound like a ban.

Finally, getting one's panties (or briefs) in a twist over something that happened 43-44 years ago opens oneself up to the charge of being a snowflake.

Great.... let's just eliminate the word man altogether .... How do we manage (oops personage) that? How will the Wo-Persons react?

Let's get it out phrases and products, everything....

Person-hole cover, Sony Walk-person, watch out for the bogey-person, the sea cow becomes a person-atee, Man-o-Man (oops Person-o-Person) There are many (opps Persony) options....

Pat-a-cake, pat-a-cake,
Baker's person!
This could get better,
but it is sure to worsen...

Let's expand it to literature... shall we?

From King Richard II: Act V, scene III:

O king, believe not this hard-hearted person!
Love loving not itself none other can.

From A Midsummer Night's Dream: Act II, scene II:

Is't not enough, is't not enough, young person,
That I did never, no, nor never can,

IF by RUDYARD KIPLING

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all persons doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
.....
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Person, my self-identifying masculine entity!

I can't wait to be promoted! I am ready to be moved from mid-personage-ment to senior personage-ment!

What lunacy!! I can hardly believe some of these elitist imbeciles can personage to find their way home each day.

And, you can quote me on that!

Everett

And yes, I miss Andy Rooney, and I would love to hear his take on it. I am sure it would..... wait for it.....

Raise his eyebrows...

Not sure I agree that gender neutral is a desirable goal. Yes misuse is undesirable. But there IS a reason for the distinction(conciseness).

Now what are the origins of the word 'man'? :D

When this kind of insane crap is allowed to go all the way to state championships, it's easy to tell who's currently winning the debate. It's sad that at least two actual young high school female wrestler had to forfeit and give up their dreams to avoid the indignity of this.

One problem with political correctness is that what's acceptable today won't be acceptable tomorrow. Everyone is forced to keep up because of the latest lawsuit, label inventor, or other senseless "huperson rights" fight making the news.

When I was a kid, a cousin my age was in wrestling, and had to face a girl that was on another school's boys team. He was nervous for several days leading up to it, that he'd get accused of grabbing her in the wrong place, hurting her, etc. He was thinking of forfeiting. He went to my grandpa (a Baptist pastor) for advice, and my grandpa told him to whip her good as fast as he possibly could and teach her it wasn't her place.

There is no 'debate'. Only one 'side' is screaming. The 'normal' side considers it insane.(polite term for asinine)

We all are what we are. We should all accept each other as is(including thy self).

This seems like an easy answer in this case. This athlete is doping and shouldn't be allowed to compete. Gender irrelevant in this case.

Never understood this PC. DO WE REALIZE -- the noun PERSON ends in "SON".

SON IS DEFINITELY a noun from the male gender.
