I have some redwoods planks 3”x8”x7’ I’d like to use in turning some bowls. Has anyone used redwood for large turnings?

Redwood is an open grained soft wood and as such is subject to tear out especially end grain when turning a bowl.

Practice shear cutting end grain using a bowl gouge on less expensive pine or fir. Then step into your redwood stash. Should be some nice looking bowls.
