Before I left on my last trip I found the planer I have been looking for on CL. I have been looking a while as this model doesn’t show up too often. I was looking for the 15” version but a 20” showed up so I snagged it. I got it for very cheap as the previos owner had ruined the seals on the gearbox somehow and it was leaking oil to the point that the gear box was completely empty. I like this version of the Grizzly planer because it has a very long cast iron bed. It is completely out of alignment and literally every bolt on it was loose. Not sure what that was about. I decided to tear down the gear box and replace all bearings and seals. Probably not the best decision because after I ordered all the parts I noticed an entirely new assembled gear box was only about $30 more than the seals and bearings. Oh well. It is very easy to work on thankfully. Since I got the planer for just slightly more than free I decided to order up a Shelix cutter head for it also. I had this model in 15” in my old shop and loved it. M

I spent yesterday reassembling the planer. It is now up and running. I replace every seal and bearing in the gear head and replaced the cutterhead with a Shelix that included new bearings. Since I got the planer for the price of picking it up I felt good about springing for the new cutterhead. As usual with used machinery everything was either loose or completely out of adjustment but everything aligned up nicely at the end. The only thing I didn’t have to mess with was the table-cutterhead alignment which remained within tolerances.

Good! Now you need not worry about getting saw dust on it.

The removal of the car was made possible by a near catastrophic incident in the shop that missed the car by about 1/4 inch. When we bought the house last year it came with a 100’ compressed air hose reel on the ceiling. Unknown to me it was only secured to the ceiling by bolts and fender washers secured into only the drywall. It fell from the ceiling narrowly missing the car. The car was moved the next day. It was a very near miss but I agreed she needed to move the car

How long did it take thee to loosen those bolts 'almost' totally loose?
