I can't help with Japanese style tools for Japanese style projects because I haven't done that kind of work.
I build American style projects and I find that your best bet is to start the project and work on it a bit. Once you have a need for a specific tool on that project, you will know it. You buy it at that point instead of trying to guess ahead. I buy tools only when I actually need them in a project. Recommendations from others who do similar projects might help, but if they do things differently from the way you choose, their tools might not be right for you.
