I just browsed the hardwood area of one area Menards for the first time in a year. One special piece did follow me home... not too bad for a touch over $10!

Beautiful board. A few years ago I was in need of a couple of sheets of oak plywood when I went to Menards. I found a beautiful sheet on the pile that had tiger stripes through most of the sheet. Naturally I bought that one. I made a cedar chest from it and it now sits in my bedroom. Looking through wood at the stores is like panning for gold. You never know when it is time to strike it.

I mostly shop Menards at South Emerson Ave. and Southport Road. Either there or at the Columbus Indiana store. Southport is the closest, next closest is probably Pendleton Pike off I-465 but I've not been there since they put up the new store. I like Menards pretty well, especially for tools and hardware. For construction lumber I like Lowes. I normally only go to Home Depot when I am shopping for something in particular like my AC / heat pump or the new carpet we had put down last fall.
One reason I usually got to Southport is that Menards and Home Depot are practically across the street from each other and if they don't have what I want, Lowes is quite close down around the corner at Greenwood.
If I were to go to a store like Home Depot at Greenfield IN (close for me) and they don't have what I want I'm still maybe 25 miles away from any other big box store.
If anyone wonders about places named "Green something" just 20 minutes south-east of me is the town of Greensburg and much farther west of me is Greencastle.
Probably more than anyone wanted to know.

Getting back to this lucky find...

Some woods look best when quartersawn. However I've had past tiger-maple, and now this mystery mahogany, which was very much flatsawn to show the striping. So this wood did a lot of bowing in the last 6 months as it acclimated in my shop.

I'm just now working up a scheme to use it. It's along the lines of the Scrap-Bin Scrap-Bin and Viking Tool Chest postings I've made a couple months ago.

Yes, it is from the mahogany section at Menard's. It's probably one of the African woods "like mahogany", which is almost all that can be sold any more for new wood. Their whole pile had a bunch of plain boards and then this one

This was a basic project, now ready for a basic housewarming gift.
