Here is a picture I took today of a tree that looks like it has icicles on it but my gut tells me this is something else..... for one we have not had much rain in the last while and two it is above freezing.

I didn't mind shooting the pictures from the sidewalk but approaching the tree by walking on their property didn't seem right. I sure wanted to but restrained.

I was hoping that perhaps charlese would be stopping by and could enlighten us. But perhaps others have seen this before and know what is happening???

I agree with JPG ,,we dont have them here but I have heard paper birch has a lot of sap, heard up to a gallon or more a day from some trees can be safely harvested, cook it down and see ,,some make pancake syrup and wine from birch ,,,,,,, https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=birch+sap

Dont really know, for sure, but looks like sap (pitch) to me. to test - break off some and light it with a match. If it burns well (as I suspect) you have found some fire starter material. Put it in a box and you now have a tinder box for your walks next winter.

Some old timers would eat a small amount as a gass preventor. I tried, just for the heck of it--Tasted BAD! NEVER SWALLOWED IT.

Looks like the tree has a snotty nose,
