As I'm prepping to build a workbench I pretty much have all the parts laid out that I'm going to need. The next question I had was how many plywood sheets was I going to need and how to fully maximize them by laying out the cuts?

After a little searching I found a really slick app called CutList Plus. But they have something like 4 versions - 3 of which cost some $$$. Not wanting or needing all the bells and whistles of that, I found this small little (free) app
that does everything I need - plus it prints it all out. It is really great and anyone who wants to layout their cuts to maximize their wood or sheets should try it. PC only. It's a ZIP file is only around 280k and once Unzipped, there's a single EXE with some sample TXT files with some samples in there that you can look at.

Once you figure out how the interface works (quite simple actually) the program seems to have a real nice algorithm.

Thanks for that program, Tim. Put it in "My Favorites" in the 'wood shop' folder. I'll sure give it a try one of these days.

Thank you very much for sharing this information. This is one of those things that one often wishes for, but never has, when "designing or trying to figure out how to proceed with a project" without wasting wood. With the cost of things today, this program is a money saver!

Just another example of software developers sticking their head in the sand and pretending that the Mac doesn't exist.

Does this program allow for grain direction? Can you tell it which way you want the grain to go on each piece? If knot, it woodkn't help me much.

Not that many people can afford a “Mac” and a hobby as well, and Mac developers generally do not give software for free.

On the program, there is a "grain direction" button, along with the ability to manually place your pieces/cuts. Definitely a simple program to use, and I am not a computer whiz, more of a trial and error type.

Thanks for the info I also put it in my favorites if I should need it in the future. I use Delta cad for all my drawings and make my own material cut layout with that program.
PS Delta cad is very user friendly and you can download a free demo to use for 30 days
