...it says it is not for through cuts. Is there a factual reason why it won't work for through cuts? Or is this just stated for safety purposes, thus why they say to use the blade guard (with its riving knife) for through cuts?

I have used the riving knife for many thru cuts. I suspect the disclaimer is there for the reason you suggest.

I think the idea here is that you use the upper blade guard for all cuts that you can, this one is for the times where you can't use the upper guard as in non through cuts.

Can it be used, yes. The best is the upper guard except in the cases where it doesn't work. So should it be used for all cuts, no.

Safety first! That is why we use guards and other safety equipment in the first place. Did you know that the early Mark 5's did not come with blade guards. It was an accessory item you could purchase separately. With the lawsuit happy world we live in today tool manufactures are forced to barrage us with safety rules for using their tools. Not everyone can remember to keep body parts away from sharp spinning things on their tools without being reminded. And yes I use my guards and safety equipment.

I hadn't known that before.

Interesting as the 10ers came with the upper guard - but not the lower, and I have fitted mine with a Mark 5 lower guard - but have never got around to installing the upper guard.

Is this the Mark 5 guards you use on you 10ER? I find these make a great set for use on the Model 10's. When setting up the blade on the Model 10 5/8" Arbor I put the machined washer on first followed by the blade than the machined spacer and nut. This gives the needed spacing for the lower guard.

The Model 10's did have a lower guard available as an accessory but they are very rare. Below is mine. Yes for anyone noticing that is the "A" & "B" SPT Brackets below along with a Flexible Shaft on the bench.

Sorry for the delay in responding, we were away all week camping.

Yes that looks like the one I use, but I only have the lower part. I had to remove the end plate as on mine as it made it "just" that much to wide and the blade wouldn't center in the slot. I should take 1/4" off the edge and that would fix it. Skip Campbell used to have a page on his MKCtools website to show the mod, but I can't find it now, I guess he took it off now that he is selling one of his own design.

I have seen pictures of the OEM lower guard, but as you say they are very rare, and I don't foresee ever owning one myself.
I have seen various DIY guards posted on the web. At some point I want to try making one from an old pot.

Your 10er accessories collection is very complete, How do you like the Flexible Shaft, I've often thought that would be handy to have.
