Hello fellow Shopsmithers! First time poster, first time Shopsmith owner. I picked up a Shopsmith with some accesories the other day. A couple questions.

The first one being how do you remove the play in the attachments? I put the bandsaw onto the side that the ways pivot when put in the "vertical" mode. The cast table on the bandsaw was super rusty, so while I was sanding/scotchbriting it back to life I noticed it wiggled. A lot. It looks like the ways are loosely attached to the end peice? I adjusted the setscrews on the "feet" of the bandsaw, but it still wiggles more than I feel is acceptable.

It looks like where the ways connect there are plastic plugs. are there screws behind there? How else does one take out that slop?

On the other side the previous owner had the scroll saw that I hadn't bothered to take out or mess with. I did the same thing, tightened the "feet" of the scroll saw, unlike the other side it has play where the posts/feet slide into the the base. Shim it? Some voodoo shopsmith forum magic?

Last question, any tips/things I should do to the planer before powering it up? I should specify it is the 12" with the seperate feed motor.

I lubricated the headstock, (the holes near the drive pulleys) ran it through the different speeds a couple times, used scotchbrite on the ways, paste waxed them. Pretty much paste waxed everything that moves/slides needs to be smooth.

The previous owner was an elderly gentleman, he kept pretty much everything in its original packaging. its got the all the little accesories. featherboard, pushblock, drill bits in the factory pouch with the wax still on the tip, dado stack, router chuck/bits, looks like moulding chuck and bits, belt sander... the list goes on.

I am very much a novice woodworker, but I would very much like to learn about this machine before I hurt/break myself or the machine.

Are you 'tightening' the spt clamp(the knurled handle)?

So ya lubed both oil holes?

Yes. The knurled handle is tight. The play in it is side to side not front to back. I went over to my little shop and shot a couple videos showing my dilemma.

And yes the two oil holes. One behind the Shopsmith logo, and the other on the shaft under the spring.

*Also upon closer inspection, what I had previously stated as "plastic plugs" were not. And I don't see a way to adjust those tubes...

The ponytail being the handle that locks the top tubes from being flipped vertical? If that is the ponytail, yes.

How about the set screws that secure the tubes in the base castings?

The 'key' to solving this is WHAT is moving relative to what else.

I see the way tubes moving in/out of the base casting bores at band saw end.

I see the tie bar moving relative to the base casting on the jig saw end.

Not seen is whether the bench tubes are moving in the base castings.

What you are seeing is NOT typical!

Way tubes are rock solid on the jigsaw end or the "ponytail" end. how are those tubes supposed to seat on the other end?

I've tightened all of the set screws reasonably tight, The only play I have left is in the post holes on the "ponytail" side and the way tubes on the other side.

I am VERY glad to hear its not typical. I am very sad that my machine is atypical.

Anyone had any trouble with way tubes being wobbly? I have a welder! :P

Perhaps you missed some set screws? Have you adjusted the 'pony tail' for minimal play between the tiebar and the base casting?

I did not realize the pony tail was adjustable. Thanks for that thread, I'll tinker and report back.
