This is the first time I have tried to replicate a photo. It is easier to just carve a subject it is your interpretation. And if you make a mistake you can just adjust the carving to make it work. But replicating does not leave much room for doing that. This is my Australian shepherd and shop mate. The wood is sycamore.

That is truly amazing work! Case in point, I had to check the in-process photos to be sure that you hadn’t installed some glass eyes ... how the heck did you achieve that detail and finish?

I’m curious, many hours do you have in this carving? Do you sell your sticks, or collect them?

This carving I have somewhere around 16 to 18 hr of carving. The wood was much harder than I expected and being the first one replcating a subject I moved slowly. I still have a satin spar varnish to apply for protection. The eyes are carved and painted. Learning to do good eyes took some years of carving. Still learning. This stick is for us. But I do sell sticks and other carvings.

That is beautiful. Treasure it, the stick can last for generations, the companion will be gone way too soon!

Truly beautiful work!
