I'm considering shipping my 30-year-old Mark V headstock to Shopsmith for a general review and any repairs necessary. I'd like to get some feedback from anyone who has an older Mark V and has done the same. Thank you.

Try Jacob Anderson in Virginia Beach. He has been repairing SS headstocks for quite a few years and although I have never used his services I have never heard a bad thing about his work. WWW.jacobsrepairshop.com. I believe is his website.

Jacob is top flight in my book. Just work out a schedule with him on when and how to ship it.

First 30 years old is not at all old for a shopsmith. If it hasn't been worked to death or not had periodic maintenance then perhaps it might benefit from a professional looking at it but it at least pretty likely that you can do the work yourself if inclined.

My guess is that it might need new belts but maybe not, it might need a new quill which would be a good thing anyway as the two bearing version will out perform your worn single bearing one. Aside from that I would not expect much else to be needed.

These machines are simple to work on and you can start with a good cleaning and go from there. If it gets to be too much then button it back up and send it somewhere.
