Yes the shavings look like they could come from a segmented turning with a nice mix of woods but in this case they are from my new carbide barrel trimmer. A real mixed bag of woods for the 10 newest pens I just finished. A few I know and a few I can guess and a few that I have no idea what they are. That is how grab bags are.

Anyway one of my Granddaughters has reached 10 and a good age for a pen that she just might keep. Turned another weed pot and added some straw flowers so it is pretty much a turned birthday.

So I like to turn pens in batches, normally about a dozen but this time only 10. One is a polyester that looks like aged ivory. That was the hardest one to turn and I still haven't figured out the best way........ ended up scrapping a lot of the material off which is slow and not a lot of fun. I think I like the look but not sure it's worth the effort.

So here they are:
My favorite and the one that is the designated gift is the one they called "Coffee" wood, second up from the bottom. Very interesting grain patterns. My least favorite is the one on the top. No idea what kind of wood but not a good material for pens. That one is a gift for someone I don't like that much........... just kidding, I think I'll just keep it and use it.

Nice job! If you turn resins, consider getting some of the new negative rake carbides from Easy Wood. I put one on my Easy Finisher and was amazed at the difference. Still got nice curlys, but no catches or chipping. I think I will get or make a new Easy Finisher just for negative rake resin work!

I don't love turning acrylics because of the smell but this polyester is not bad. I have a few more blanks so I will get a chance to test out these cutters maybe this coming week.

That’s the video that sold me! I subscribe to his channel, and many others. A bunch of them did a pre-release video, and I jumped on it! I ordered directly from Easy Wood and had the cutters in a matter of days. Resins can be quite grabby when turned with conventional tools, this eliminates that. I prefer traditional tools for turning wood, these fro the resin and hybrid blanks.

Those new cutters made a big difference in working with the plastic. No catches!

But the plastic is still hard to work with as it makes a huge ball of mess and it only takes seconds for you to lose site of what you are doing. The pen parts being smaller and more of spindle just clogs up with the turnings.

Only had time to turn and then start sanding one pen, went to 600 grit and will start with the finer gits tomorrow. I have blanks for a total of 6 more pens but rather then do them all I was planning on a one a day approach so I can get some other stuff done too. Well already behind...... And I still haven't found my 20/20 polish so I might have to order another bottle which will slow me down even more. Or I guess I could try something else....

Anyway I'm happy with the new cutters for working this plastic, thumbs up to easywood for making these.

Finished the pen and turned 5 more. Two more of the "ivory" for a total of 3 of them and then 3 wood ones. Expermenting with different ways of turning the plastic so it isn't such a mess and having to stop so often to clear it up so I can see what is happening. Today went a lot faster but still slower then wood.

I really like the grain on the one to the right, wish I knew what wood it was as I'd get some more. Anyone have a guess?
