Adding a 3 wire plug to an old greenie

I have an old greenie with a 2 wire plug. It is having some problems, and I think the cord needs to be replaced. I'd like to use a new cord with a ground wire. Can I just tie the ground wire to the chassis? Not sure where else it would go. I assume new shopsmiths have a ground wire - where do they tie it?

Thank you!

Find a screw/nut on the motor frame and connect the green wire there. The green wire should be the longest wire so if the others pull loose, the ground wire will remain connected.

I tied mine to one of the motor mount bolts. I removed the paint from the motor mount casting and the motor frame mounting flange under the washers. Then I used an ohm meter and checked for continuity between the bolt and all parts it the SS (head stock, carriage, etc.).

SlimJim,
I have done this on two "Greenies" and a "Goldie" I have restored. As JPG has suggested I did attach the ground wire to the motor. John is showing a similar idea of how he did it on his beautifully restored Model 10. It is difficult to use the original strain relief on a new grounded cord. It is generally larger having three wires instead of two. I would highly recommend using a strain relief and one type is in the picture below. The hole it goes into is not totally round. It has flat sides to keep the cord from turning in the hole. See the drawing below to help understand what I mean. You will most likely need to enlarge the existing hole so match it to the strain relief you use.

Oops, I missed the word Greenie. Thinking all MK 5/V's had 3 wire cords I assumed he was talking Model 10. Sorry for the confusion. :o

Thanks to all for the tips and pictures on where to attach the ground and how to do the strain relief.
