What drill bits do you use

I plan to do some horizontal boring and use either turned dowels or threaded rod to connect parts of mail box post and a couple of other projects. What is the deepest boring you do and what type bits do you use to do it. I have a few bits that are all standard length and am looking at some 12 inch ones. Do i really need something that long or is a 6 to 8 inch dowel or rod long enough? Or, as just popped into my head, is a dowel or rod useful for alignment only?

Can't help with your construction question but here's a drill bit extension. As long as your bit cuts a hole larger than the bit holder, it'll work for deep holes.

That 12" extension will work well for longer pepper mills.
