The clip below was taken from the June 1950 issue of Mechanics Illustrated.
It shows a flat top on the upper pulley guard. Anyone ever seen one like this?

The later Belt Guard has a flatter top but that one looks more like it has been ground flat. That could be a prototype Belt Cover to allow more clearance to be able to cut thicker stock on the table saw when the stock is over the left side of the table and headstock. The Pulley and Guard are a limiting factor which is why there is a 2 step headstock pulley for the Model 10's. The early belt guard has nearly a half an inch clearance above the pulley. That's a lot of cutting capacity loss for an 8" blade. The later belt guard reduced some of that lost cutting capacity. Removing the guard and replacing the pulley with the 2 step one gives maximum cutting capacity to items extending over the left side of the table and headstock.

It does appear flatter than normal. If it was a prototype belt cover then wouldn't they need the 2 step pulley?
The 2 Step pulley was offered in most of the early accessory brochures. So they knew it was an issue to crosscut long thick boards.
In some 10ER manuals I scanned I found these two photos. I don't think either picture can make a complete cut without hitting either the pulley (1950 brochure) or the pulley guard (1953 brochure).
The photo from the 1950 Owner's Guide shows a mounting hole on the side of the headstock and what looks like a bolt on top where the pulley guard would hook.
I have read a little about the side bolt. Can't remember what I read though.
I find myself reading the same thread several times just to absorb all the information in it.

Found this photo in Shop Notes #3. It shows the 2 Step Pulley being used.
Note the side hole for a pulley guard. And a Shopsmith badge on the back side with no place for a serial number.
Is the 2 Step pulley maybe a rare accessory?

The 'side' boss and screw are to retain the bearing spacer that separates the two drive sleeve bearings.

That's it. And I found this quote from a PDF from Everett:
Original Machine Headstock Cast had a threaded mount on the left front of
the headstock that was moved to the back.
That's the change I remember reading.
Mine is on the back of course.

There was another on the switch side as well in a few very early pix. Orrrr as Everett said it was moved.

The bolt on the back side retains the drive sleeve, they all have that one.

A small number of 10ERs were made to be used for demonstrations and have the second metal name plate on the back (customer) side, like the one in the first and second pictures. I have one of them, #23430, it's my dedicated drill press.

I haven't seen the two step pulley mentioned before, so I suspect they are rare.

Nice research, you are definitely in the right place, many here share your fascination with 10ER history.

It's been on there for years, I don't use the drill press that often, but haven't noticed any undue wear on the pulleys. It does rub very slightly on the way tubes, but I haven't noticed wear there either. Does that cover all the bases.
