WHAT CHANGED IN 1972?

Well that is an interesting question and one I can not answer. I have one 10ER and the rest are post 1972 so I have nothing to look at.

Since the shopsmith was reintroduced in 1972 there would have been a few things like bench tube size that was different for a while previously, don't recall what it was but I know people have posted about it.

Bench tubes od has not changed since the late Gilmer Goldie days(previous to that they were 1 7/8").

I ask the question since I am not aware of anything that changed then. Looking to learn something.


I also wonder WHEN the existence of Mark 5's will be acknowledged by RLF....

How about a typo? Perhaps the 7 s/b a 6?

Nope! They WERE 1/8" larger. The base castings also vary. Those ribs do not project as far(1/16" less). The carriage holes are also larger.

The lift assist clamps to both sets of tubes and they way they are made the tube size matters. So again what year did they change, that should be a reason and a different clamps between two versions. My questions was could it be 1962 rather then 1972?

Ah So! Too many "7". That would be about the right time. Lotta other changes going on then. Yuba/Magna American, Gilmer/Poly-v, .75/1.125 HP.

I do not know why 1972 would make a difference. The Lift Assist mounts to the bench and way tubes. The only change to those was going from 1-7/8" bench tubes to 1-3/4" bench tubes about the time they changed from Greenies to Goldies. JPG does your Goldie have 1-3/4" bench tubes? The other difference in the Lift Assist is the pressure cylinders for the heavier Power Pro headstock and the need to release the cylinder for the Mark 7 double tilt. 1972 does not seem to be where the difference lies.

Probably never, Shopsmith Inc. used Mark V and Mark 5 interchangeably for advertising through the 1970's. It changed on the machine's vent plate in early 1980. To them Mark 5 and Mark V are the same. Besides they can't even get their history page right. Example from the first line

Mark V (Model 500) Magna America put this American classic 5-in-1 tool into production in 1953.

It was Magna Engineering Corporation not Magna American Corporation (who incorporated in 1963) that first made the Mark 5.

My best advice is if you have an early Mark 5 (pre 1972) you want to put a Lift Assist on call Shopsmith to find out the difference.
