I'm looking for some advice on removing the tires from the bandsaw wheels. The tires are dry rotted, so I bought new ones. The problem is: I removed as much of the tires as I could, but the adhesive holding the rest of the rubber on wont come off. Just curious what the best method is, or is there a certain solvent or adhesive remover I should try? Thank you for any input.

Tough job. i had mixed results with acetone ond an old chisel and just scraped it away. It took a while. More of a pain than replacing sandpaper on the 12 inch sanding disk.

I think that some auto supply stores still sell door gasket adhesive remover that may be helpful.

Any one ever try ammonia? Is the glue rubber based?

I once very carefully used a regular wire brush wheel on the Shopsmith aluminium band saw wheels and replaced the tires with Urethane type tires rather than the factory Rubber type tires.
However, I think when I replace them the next time (and I think I will soon) I will use a brass wire brush wheel since they are softer wires. And yes, IMHO, I do prefer the Urethane type tires over the Rubber type tires. But again just IMHO.

Thanks everyone for the great advice. After prying off as much of the rubber I could with pliers, I tried several different solvents. Then scraping with a razor. What ended up working the best for me, tar and bug remover. Soaked it for up to an hour, then removed with a knife. Finally, used my dremel with a wire wheel and cleaned it up with mineral spirits. Shines like a new wheel! Bob, I am also replacing them with urethane tires. Thanks again everyone, love the shopsmith forum!
