Hello, today I made the amazing purchase of a very well maintained V 500. With a bunch of add ons and spare parts. It was one owner purchased in 1985. As this being a totally an unknown to me never heard of it until 3 hours before purchase. It was a craigslist find when I was looking for a jointer. So my questions are: what should I look for in wear.does it need to be lubricated? And do the newer add ons work with the older ones. The thickness planer is something I would like.

Hi and welcome to the group. If you could post a couple of pics of your find we can probably help you a lot more. The unit should get a thorough going over just because if the age. They are not difficult to work on. There are lots of folks here that can help you out. If it runs it is good.
As JPG said a planer is not a jointer and a jointer is not a planer. In my book there is no such thing as a jointer/planer.

Welcome to the forum. I would recommend reading the sticky notes at the top of this section. Asking questions is encouraged and we love pictures. Pictures have both a file and pixel size requirement.

Actually there is. Two beds. One above the cutter and one below the cutter.

Joint using the upper bed.

Planer using the lower(up/down adjustable) bed.

Specially designed tools not withstanding.

Item one is always "NEVER turn the speed control unless the machine is turning"... About everything else is flexible.

Since you bought it from the original owner, I hope it came with the owners manuals. Read them! They will show you what needs maintenance and how to do it. If it didn't come with manuals go back to the Maintenance and Repair section in the topic Shopsmith Large Format Drawings, Illustrations and More by Everett Davis. This will be one of the first three topics. In it you will find a wealth of information on the Shopsmith tools. Some are directly linked there and others are on “My Google Drive” with documents too large to be directly linked. Everett has become the Shopsmith historian by saving and restoring manuals and other documents. Even the older manuals in PDF form there will help with use and maintenance. Enjoy your new find and if a question comes up just ask. Pictures help in explaining questions.
