Hey all,

As mentioned in a previous post. I just inherited a Mark V and I'm going through all of the accessories and parts. Well I took a closer look at the jointer tonight and it doesn't quite seem right. I feel like there is supposed to be some type of support further down the fence. Currently the only support the fence has is the adjustment screw on at the in-feed. Also, there doesn't seem to be a way to lock the fence horizontally. I can lock the vertical angle, but not where it sits on the table.

So...what parts am I missing?

The only support close to the outfeed end of the fence is the little cast-in tab on the bottom of the fence. When you loosen the fence, the outfeed end of the fence rests on that tab, near the cutterhead on the infeed table. When you tighten the fence, the tab should lift slightly (but not excessively) off of the table.

As for locking the fence horizontally, the clamp knob is basically a double-sided socket wrench. If you push it in before turning, it engages one axis lock screw. If you pull it out before turning, it engages the other axis lock screw.

So my question. Does something go here? These 4 holes are threaded, so it seems something should be there.

MAYBE!

Look for a shaft guard laying around.

The upper two holes on the fence are for a rear blade guard and the two lower holes on either side of the shaft are for a shaft guard. These are part of the Jointer Dust Chute upgrade and have been included on Jointers with S/N above 70000 or those with date codes. I cannot tell from the pictures if yours has the dust chute but if not I recommend getting the upgrade. Not only will you get the dust chute but also the two missing guards.

Interesting, I've got the chute, but can't find the other parts around.

How big of a deal are these? Am I likely to risk fingertips without it? Or would I have to be dumb to get injured?

And looking into it, it seems I need part 513918 and 513948 (looking at https://www.shopsmith.com/service/joint ... s_list.htm). Is that right?

In the exploded parts drawing, 9,10,39,40,41. Yes common screws need not be obtained from SS.

Consider also the Auxillary fence Kit with guard and feather-boards.

Costs far less than any emergency room visit I know of.

The jointer does not leave reattachable pieces of your hands like a saw blade accident might. It will chew up flesh, bone, and pull you into it.

It could be one of the most dangerous tools in your shop if used carelessly. Don't mean to scare you, but it is.

As JPG already answered, yes. The label (41) comes attached to the guard (40) when purchased. The screws used to attach both guards are 10-24x5/16" button head screws and cheaper to find locally than paying $3.95 a piece for them from Shopsmith.
