I recently acquired an used SS strip sander, and it did not come with any platens (picture attached). I've never used a strip sander before. How critical to have the platens installed to function properly?
Anyone could please provide approx. dimension of 1" flat platen? and/or hi-res pictures?

The answer is, it depends. On some items I remove the platens and can then free sand odd shapes. Other times I need the platens. Mine were missing when I acquired my strip sander. I bought a set from Shopsmith. They were not expensive, and are easily switched in and out.

Besides the three platens listed above there is a fourth one for the Lathe Chisel Sharpening Attachment. If you do not have the Owners Manual you can order it from Shopsmith also. It is part number 556082 for $11.99. The Strip Sander is a great tool to have and once you get use too using it you will enjoy what it can do for you.
