I currently have a Mark 5 and looked at a Mark 510 this eve that is for sale. He bought it 2 years ago and has not used it. He plugged it in and the motor hummed but the saw blade turned very slowly. I shut it off and turned it by hand- it turned with a lot of resistance and there was a slight clinking sound inside as I turned it.

He was asking $500.00 for it but said he would sell for less as it wouldn't run. Could this be an easy fix or a headstock rebuild?

Any thoughts appreciated.

As an owner you know the inspection drill and oiling procedures

You can tell visually if the speed control, quadrant, and button bearing are involved

If it has to be rebuilt estimate the costs to buy the parts you likely might have to replace, and make an offer.

Other things can be involved including the motor and bearings.

In any event do NOT allow the humming and creeping to last more than a few seconds. I suspect the start switch. However a bad run winding can also cause the creep. If at a slow speed, the quill shaft will be very hard to turn.

I think you have a very good bargaining position until the motor is determined to be good. Tis a gamble(especially if extended creeping periods have occurred).

The clinking must be identified.

I agree a good look inside is imperative.

I would first manually set the speed to fast and go from there. Just make sure the loop is not being pulled by the quadrant gear.

Any chance it was shut off in High speed and it can't get going. Have had that happen once when I was buying a SS. Got it home, turned the speed dial down by manually turning the spindle..started right up. Good luck to you. Rocky

Well, I decided to pass on that one as the guy became a non-responder to my calls.

so today looked and bought one that runs but a bit noisy at high speed. It does have the 510 table upgrade but no serial number on the headstock so no idea of age. It has been repainted to a non- SS gray but don't see any sticker painted over and none on the grill plate. The headstock is quite noisy at higher speeds- it has been setting for several years and said he has just cut several boards with it. So no lubing or anything so it needs a good going over.

I'll probably remove the table and put it on my Mark 5 that runs well and has been maintained and then make the other a learning experience in repair as I have time. Thanks to all.
