I bought a Shopsmith ina box and have reassembloed the motor and most of the head unit. I have a large c-clip left over. Any ideas where it goes? Might not be part of the shopsmith but I don't know....

The most commonly missed clip is ref. 38 on the Quill Feed Assembly. See the exploded view at

Thanks! I'll pull the quill apart tonight and see if it's missing a c-clip.

OK, I figured it out. It's ref 58 in the same diagram you referenced. Thank for the hint, it got me close enough to figure it out!

External ears - no I do not think so. I am used to seeing split retaining ring there.
7/8" id is a clue.

Actually it fits perfectly and the retaining clip on the other side has ears. I looked at the rebuilt unit I bought off an ebay seller, both inside clips have ears. Learn something new every day!

I may be guilty of old vintage thinking.
Please take a pix of the retaining ring/clip with external ears installed on the drive sleeve. My recollection is of a split ring bearing retainer(Ya another type). I do not recall a different retainer there.

I have it and will post tomorrow when I have access to a computer at work. I can't edit the picture size downward to meet the forum file size limits with this tablet and my laptop died.
Funny I live without a proper computer but my Shopsmith needs must be met!

So it was the one on the Drive Sleeve not the Quill Feed Assembly. Glad you were able to find it. I should have paid more attention to the size since the Quill Feed Retaining Clip is closer to 5/8" not 7/8" like the Drive Sleeve's.

They have indeed changed parts over the years. Here is a picture of the clip in place on my 2001 headstock. Although the headstock has been upgraded with the Power Pro Motor the Quill Feed Assembly is one of the few assemblies not replaced in the upgrade so earlier parts could be on it if upgraded from an early headstock. I do not know when they changed from the clip used on your Goldie to this current one.
