I'm rebuilding a Shopsmith I bought in a box. The speed control is a bit mucked up from the speed control pullies becoming frozen to the shaft from linseed oil based lubes (red 3-in-1 is bad for your SS!).

The little clip that secures the speed control shaft into the speed control housing was destroyed. Is there a reasonable substitute? I'm headed to the hardware store after work to check the little white draws to see what they might have.

A C clip should work(some folks call them "E" clips).

I looked at the exploded view, looks like there's a spring washer and regular washer under the retaining clip. There's even part numbers but I think I can cob together a solution at the local Ace in the little white drawer section.

Internal or external retaining ring. Where the holes are located for the retaining pliers determine if it is an internal or external retaining ring.

Circlip or snap ring, they come in interior and exterior versions

Ok, so when the Shopsmith diagram calls it a "retaining ring" it should have ears?

And if it's called out as a "retaining clip" then its an E clip or C clip?

Also do not expect to get accurate clues off the drawings.

Follow what JPG said above. All those types of clips and more have been used. It depends on the application as to which one works best. Without removing the Speed Control Handle on my original headstock I believe it uses an "E" clip to hold the Worm Gear in and someone will correct me if I am wrong. The "E" clip gives a larger diameter surface against, in this case, the washers to hold the Worm Gear in place as opposed to using a "C" clip or External Retaining Ring. A "C" clip is used, for example, in the carriage table raising parts where it is on the square shaft but goes inside the end of the Pinion Gear so it needs some external clearance. In this case the "C" clip is thicker/wider than standard "C" clips. You have already seen two uses for the External Retaining Rings when you found the place for it on the Drive Sleeve. Some of the clips/rings used can be purchased at your local hardware store but others like the "C" clip used in the carriage are a specialty item.
