I'm getting back to my 10ER and am unsure how I want to finish the protractor.

I thought about polishing it but that would require a lot of work and time which I hate to try and fit in with other stuff I have to do.....

Or

Paint, masking the front, screw holes and bearing area for the knob. Not sure if the markers and numbers will be mask or sanding after and possible another color??

Just wondering what others have done, and BTW this is not at all traditional or an attempt to restore to original condition project.

All of the originals I have seen are grey with the numbers, degree marks and the knob surface bare metal. I glass blasted mine painted it and then cleaned the surfaces that should be bare metal. Sorry, I don't have a better picture but I am sure you get the point.

Not sure how important keeping paint out of the detent grooves is.

That is one nice looking 10ER! Your shop looks a little too clean though.

The paint in the grooved doesn't seem to effect anything.

Well, my wife does wood working also and she tends to keep things tidy. The Clearvue 2000CFM cyclone dust collector helps a lot. I also like to tidy things up a bit when I take pictures.

A wife that does woodworking AND helps keep the shop clean...that is a keeper for sure. You are one lucky guy! I am always envious when I see pics of your shop...both some of the equipment you have and the size of your shop. Plus you keep it clean. My hat is off to you, sir.

Like John after the metal is cleaned I paint it and remove the paint from the numbers and indexing marks. I have done several of these for the machines I have restored. On miters that have hit the blade I fill in the cut when possible before painting. Below is one that has been repaired. See the lower left corner in the picture.
