Hi all,

I am restoring a 1954 Mark V "Greenie" and was curious if someone can advise what the original colors looked like. I cleaned mine up pretty well but is difficult to tell if it was 2-Tone other than just the Headstock, Lathe tool rest, and lathe tailstock. I purchased Rustoleum Hammered Deep Green and Verde Green but am thinking the lighter color on the headstock was grey or a darker silver.

I also searched the net extensively and can't find any information or color photos.

I saw that...excellent work. The problem is that is 'post' restoration and noted that he added verde green to the base parts that appear to be one color on the original.

I wanted to authenticate the original colors since I have not started painting yet.

Found another picture of an original with clean paint. Looks like the most accurate match to repaint the 'greenie' would be to use the Rustoleum 'Verde Green' Hammered paint anywhere there is green paint and Rustoleum 'Silver' Hammered paint on the headstock.

That should do it unless someone can point me to a better match.

I too am restoring a 1956 model and have also been researching paint schemes. I found a color picture in OWWM (Old Woodworking Machines) under Magna Engineering that shows a good representation of Shopsmith and tailstock/tool holder. I believe your choices of Verde Green and Silver in Rustoleum Hammered paint to be about as accurate as you can get.

I have the caster unit on mine. The housing on either end looks quite different than the sheet metal leg assembly. However when I took out the screws that attach to the leg assembly the original colors like the Verde Green color are still like new underneath on the leg assembly.

The headstock, tool holder and tail stock look like silver in the picture that is the cover of the 1954 Mark 5 catalog in OWWM.

That does help. I went and looked at that picture and it confirms my observations. I will stick with verde green and silver for those parts identified in that catalog.
