I have a question. I read through numerous threads on here regarding the newer style lower blade guard for the 500. My question is does this guard work with the 12" steel sanding disc or do I need this for dust collection? https://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/ite ... tem=555167

I have been looking at the usual locations for a 510 lower guard, but currently there isn't any available worth buying. I have the old metal blade guards which I know are a no go.

I have a project coming up where I need to use the disc sander. SWMBO is demanding I finish her live edge coffee table

The 12" sanding disk doesn't fit in the 500 saw guard.

Other possible option might be one of these:

Being 10" this would work with the saw guard and allow the set up to work in the table rather then out board. I've been thinking about trying this out since both of my sons have 500's and it would could be a better option then staying with the shopsmith's limited solution.

Since you will be using it off a 500 table(not in the table insert), it does not matter as long as the 12" disk will fit into it.

IIUC any 505-520 lower guard(quill mounted) should work.

None of the Mark 5 or Mark V 500 Lower Saw Guards can be used with the 12" sanding Disk. They simply are not big enough. Early Mark 5's had a 9" blade and the 10" blades will not even fit it's lower guard. Shopsmith makes a stripped down version of the 510/520/M7 Lower Saw Guard for use as a dust collector.
