grinding wheel diameter

I have a wheel guard with no wheel. The Shopsmith web page doesn't show the diameter of the wheels they sell! it seems like the max. diameter would be 3 1/2 " based upon the slot in the wheel guard. Is that correct? What am I missing?

Hi John;
Just measured the ones I have, which have been used only a little and so are still pretty close to the original diameter. They are a bit over 4 1/2 inches in diameter...
4 17/32 inches per the fractional caliper.
Hope this is helpful.

Thanks Ed! But I don't see how it would fit in to the shield; I will have to get a manual or make a call. I really appreciate your reply.

My grinding wheel guard (Model 555300) came with an 8 page instruction manual that I will gladly share with anyone needing one. The current model grinding wheel guard is a different model number (555470), so I would not be "competing" with Shopsmith by providing info on a current production model.
After scanning to a decent resolution, the pdf (or jpg) files are still a bit large to post here. If interested, PM me with your email address.
And, I measured one of my grinding wheels ... it is about 4-7/8" diameter, so I am guessing 5" when new.

John;
The manual that came with my grinder is titled "Grinding Wheel Guard II", so I am guessing that there was a "I" version earlier. The manual I have is 12 pages, counting the covers, which is how the pages are numbered. I don't have the part number for the whole assembly, but the Parts List accompanying the exploded diagram shows the guard case number as 516088. Wheel size is not shown. br549's reference to the two different model numbers might support the idea of an earlier version, but it sounds like his grinding wheel size is the same as the wheels for the "II" model.
The shopsmith guard does not show up in any of the PTWFE editions before the 4th, in 1989. Before that, all the guards were shop-made.
Would be interested in hearing what you come up with.

There are two versions of the guard. I have the Grinding Wheel Guard II P/N 555470.
The grinding wheels SS sells are Norton 5" x 3/4" with a 1" mounting hole and includes multiple bushings down to a 1/2".

Thank you all! I was able to get my hands on a manual and I took the time to really look at it. It is really straightforward; the side panel on the guard is secured by 3 allen screws once removed allows for the sliding in of the arbor/wheel. It looks like originally the 4 1/2" was the standard but the 5" apparently works as well.
