Fed Ex shipment

Here is something I don't understand. I have a order being shipped via Fedex. I have been tracking this. Here is the history: 8/17- order placed, 8/19 notified order has shipped and provided tracking number. Order goes to Kentucky center when tracking number is entered on 8/20. Just put in tracking number and discovered order is in Michigan. We have a FedEx distribution facility about 10 miles from my location. I would like to know why FedEx is taking the "scenic route" when delivering orders? This shipment should be in my hands on 8/26. My point is that it doesn't make sense to me from a logistics standpoint.

It makes no sense to me either but rest assured, yours is not the only package to take the scenic route. I suspect the cause to be mishandling at one of the intermediate points.

I have seen this happen with my FedEx packages too. In my case it is because the final delivery is made by the US Postal Service. I live in Lake Oswego, Oregon (a SW Portland suburb) and have tracked packages on FedEx to as close as the Troutdale, Oregon (an East Portland suburb) FedEx Ground Distribution Hub which is about 30 miles away. They than go to a US Postal facility near Seattle, Washington to enter the USPS system and about 2 or 3 days later they find there way back here. If the package went from Troutdale to the Tualatin FedEx center instead, which is only 3 miles from me, I would have it 1 or 2 days sooner. This does not seem to be a very efficient way to get a package from point A to point B but it is how the package hand-off from FedEx to USPS is handled.

The same stuff happens to UPS deliveries when they hand it off to the USPS. I've mailed packages to a town 20 miles north and it goes from our PO to Phoenix, 150 miles south of us, then on to the original destination. I'm told it also happens when a letter or pkg. is mailed in town to another address in town.

The USPS had fun with one of my packages this summer. It was coming from NY then got as close as the distribution center a few miles from my home before it went off the CA and then back. Had to guess it got put on the wrong truck or something??? Anyway added several more days to the delivery.
I guess there must be humans involved at some point in all the delivery services....

That is certainly true. IMO it is amazing that we get things delivered as efficiently as we do on a regular basis given the unbelievable amount of stuff that moves every day. Mistakes happen but they are in the minority.
