Time to prepare for Xmas

I try to come up with woodworking presents for our friends. I have had this poplar blank glued up for a while and decided to get it underway today. I’m not sure what it will be for. I’m thinking of putting a piece of glass on top and call it a plant stand or pie stand.

An elevated platter. Put what you want on it.

I know Bill but when you give it as a present you have to tell them what it is !

The first rule of woodturning is you don't identify a turning until it's done.

It is obvious to me that you are turning that 'plank' into a nice pile of fine sawdust.
What is left over looks nice also.
I agree 'finish' it then decide what it is.

The old stand by used to be, if all else failed, add two grooves and call it an ash tray.
Not so useful in these days of diminished smoking rates.

Ok it’s done and first coat on. Still not sure what to call it. Really love poplar though. Turns nice and has beautiful grain pattern and chatoyant character. I like the price too. That’s about $5.00 worth of poplar.
