Time to prepare for Xmas

I try to come up with woodworking presents for our friends. I have had this poplar blank glued up for a while and decided to get it underway today. I’m not sure what it will be for. I’m thinking of putting a piece of glass on top and call it a plant stand or pie stand.

An elevated platter. Put what you want on it.

I know Bill but when you give it as a present you have to tell them what it is !

The first rule of woodturning is you don't identify a turning until it's done.

It is obvious to me that you are turning that 'plank' into a nice pile of fine sawdust. :D

What is left over looks nice also. ;)

I agree 'finish' it then decide what it is.

The old stand by used to be, if all else failed, add two grooves and call it an ash tray. ;)

Not so useful in these days of diminished smoking rates. :)

Ok it’s done and first coat on. Still not sure what to call it. Really love poplar though. Turns nice and has beautiful grain pattern and chatoyant character. I like the price too. That’s about $5.00 worth of poplar.
