Good Morning,
Looks like I am missing the miter safety grip & shoe, part number 514464.
What would you buy - the exact replacement or something different from ebay?
I would like to have rubber on the bottom end. Any suggestions?
514464 Miter Gauge Safety Grip Rod & Shoe - $8.95
Thanks,
Jeff

I would go with the original only because I like mine so much. Be advised that there at least two versions of the hold down device. Call Shopsmith Customer Service and get the latest model. I believe that the newer style is backward compatible to the older miter gauges.

On the original the height of the pad was adjusted with two nuts, the current model use a knob on the side,. The older style can be upgraded.

Jeff,
If you are missing only part number 514464 the Miter Gauge Safety Grip Rod & Shoe which is $8.95 I would get that if you have the current style hold down parts. If yours is the older/original Safety Grip with the thumb screw adjustment you can replace it with part number 555125 the Quick-Clamp Retro-Fit Kit which is $28.72. The remainder of the Safety Grip is the same from it's introduction with the Mark 5 to now. The newer quick clamp is faster and easier to use. The MrToolHunter video from rpd's post will show you which one you have.
This works well as is but if you feel you need to have a "rubber grip" on the bottom you can add something glued on or Dip It comes to mind. Give it a try as is first to see if you feel it needs something else.

Not a fan of Dip It for that application. Tried it on some clamps. One glue up ruined the coating. The steel on the Jorgensens broke through. A 1" cane tip might be a better option for the miter gauge hold down. Though, I've never had a problem with slippage.

Gene's post is why I say to try it first as is. In 65 years there hasn't been a need for the makers of the Shopsmith to change the "shoe" surface for the Safety Grip.
