I’m still trying to get ahead of the Xmas present thing. This is a piece of mesquite that I roughed out years ago and have never quite gotten to. It’s like turning a land mine. Ready to explode at any moment.

Thats really pretty. I havent yet even tried to setup SS for turning.
It seems like a whole different craft than sawing/drilling/sanding to me .

Paul,

That is impressive...how do you find Mesquite wood to turn, just in general? I have some here that I was going to attempt a bowl with, but haven't gotten to it. Any tips for working with Mesquite?

Turning on the SS is just pure fun for me. I highly recommend it Bainin. There is certainly a learning curve but not a difficult one. As far as tips on turning burls first off be careful. They tend to explode on you unexpectedly so protective gear is absolutely necessary. Probably a good idea for all turning but with burls expect the unexpected. Other than that it’s just the usual. Have very sharp chisels. I rough turned this burl a long time ago and it has been drying. They are beautiful when finished and worth the effort.
