What's with all the Russians?

There's always been the odd Russian spammer or two on this site, but suddenly we've got more Russian interference than the 2016 election.
What's going on?

They are trying to sell us something, but for those of us who can't read Russian, it won't work.

The moderator that has been intercepting them in the early AM is temporarily unavailable. AM for us is PM for them. Over 15 SPAM POSTS BY MULTIPLE SPAMMERS HAVE BEEN DELETED SO FAR TODAY, and required almost an hour to flush the posts as well as to ban their future access to the forum.
