I just read a post on another part of the forum where use of Ryobi rip fence/adaptation was discussed and the poster mentioned intention to improve dust collection in the future.
That got be wondering what people have done to improve/create dust collection implements for the Mark V. Just this morning I learned why the disc sander chute I bought a very long time ago never fit properly. I don’t think the steel disk was even available at the time, or it wasn’t clear to me at the time that I needed it. I don’t use the sander an awful lot and most of the time use it on the left side of the machine.
I do like fabrication and I was a metal shop teacher so if anyone has done anything with any type of dust collection I’d love to see it.

I believe the disk sander dust chute you have is a modified 510/520 dust chute. The arbor for 510 and 520's is longer than the 500's to accommodate the larger table. Not sure if it is still available, but when the 510 table upgrade first came out it came with a longer arbor for the steel sanding disk to replace the original 500 arbor.

The only Mark V Model 500 or Mark 5 Disc Sander Dust Chute that I know of is the stripped down Mark V 510/520 and Mark 7 Lower Blade Guard. It is part number 555167 and is still available if you check under Sanding. Because it is a stripped down version of the Lower Blade Guard it can use the 12" Steel Sanding Disk with either the short or long hub. You cannot use the Aluminum Sanding Disks with it. None of the lower Blade Guards made for the Original Table System (AKA 500) can hold a 12" Sanding Disk. We could talk about the 10" or 9" Shopsmith/Sawsmith Sanding Disks but I'll save that for another time when it comes up.

As for the dust collection itself, airflow will be the key since it is hard to enclose the entire Sanding Disk except the portion you are actually sanding on. That area changes with different items being sanded. This is still better than not having any dust collection and having sawdust floating everywhere.
