Hi folks, in a previous post about the lower blade guard I mentioned I had a dust chute for the 12” sander that didn’t fit. I was about to sell it when I decided to give it one more try. I realized I had a 5/8” to threaded 5/8” arbor made by a machine shop teacher so I could use the Sears blades my Dad gave me. Well, the short version is the disk fit on the end, (the arbor has a slot for the locknut) and all I had to do was adjust the outer cover so the disk could spin freely, which it did. Now that the problem is solved, I’d like to have an arbor made that fits the spindle and then has a non threaded end for the disk. Are there any machinists on this forum that can do this kind of thing?

Is this for some kind of non-Shopsmith Sanding disk? If it is it may be cheaper to get a Steel Shopsmith 12" Sanding Disk rather than having something made. If you have a Shopsmith 12" Sanding Disk with the shorter hub (500) and want to change it to the longer hub (510/520/M7) that is part number 514493 and is available from Shopsmith.

There have been many different arbors made for the Shopsmith's over the years to do many different functions. One may already exist to do the function you want.

Thanks Russ, From the schematic, it doesn’t seem like that hub will fit my model 500 cast Aluminum disk.
I only want to move the disk farther from the machine so the dust chute will be usable with the disk.
I’m not sure where to look for the other arbors you refer to.

For a Mark 5, through the slot is not a good option, better to use off the left edge of the table.

The dust chute advances with the quill, so that will not allow its use with the aluminum disk.

So you can visualize the problem.

Neither aluminum nor steel sanding disk will not fit in the Mark V - 500 saw guard.

Here is a picture of the SS sanding disk chute for the Mark V-500
SS say it won't work with the aluminum sanding disk.
Note the nose (distance between the ring where it mounts on the quill and left wall of the chute.) That is why the aluminum disk won't fit, the hub is too short.



So the best options are,

- buy a steel sanding disk

- make a DIY dust chute like the one in this link.

All Shopsmith Lower Blade Guards attach to the Quill.

I have not seen an Arbor that would attach to the Aluminum Sanding Disk to extend it further from the Quill. You could use a 5/8" Universal Arbor like P/N 505506 or earlier version (22-031, 12 031 or 126-1X) and slide the Aluminum Sanding Disk on it over the threaded end but you will damage the threads with the set screw so use one you do not want to use for other purposes. You can cut off the extra threaded shaft length so it doesn't come through the Sanding Disk face if you want. The other option is to use the same Arbor but not the set screw and use the nut and a washer to hold the Sanding Disk on. 505506 and 22 031 have a keyed washer that will work well for this. 12 031 and 126-1X do not have the keyed washer.

These are only suggestions and I have not tried it to see if the Sanding Disk will fit inside the Lower Guard with this option. I suggest trying it first to see if it extends the Sanding Disk to far that it hits the other side of the guard before modifying arbors.

Thanks guys. I already tried extending the quill and it didn’t work as RPD explained in pix and detail. I already have a 5/8 to 5/8 threaded arbor and it did work fine. The Model 500 guard has enough adjustability to allow positioning the disk within it’s opening.
There was reference in the previous post referring to the saw blade guard, which is another topic on another thread I had started. Maybe a mistype?
I also posted a similar thread in the Penmaker’s forum and there’s a member who is a machinist and makes many odd parts on request. I’ve been in communication with him and he is going to make the part I’m looking for.
Can’t post the pic, unsure how to do it.
