Purchased this saw used in a Shopsmith package. Just getting it set up for use. Found it does not have the foot casting assembly, part #59, and no blade backup # 57. After searching I found my saw is set up the same as the newer saws which do not show the casting or a blade backup of any kind. All the band and scroll saws I have used have had a blade back up of some type. Is it now felt that a blade backup is no longer needed or am I missing something?

That is correct, there is no backup on the upgraded scroll saw. Mine (gray) was upgraded by a PO and is the same.
Newer scrollsaws don't seem to have the backup. I suspect it is to discourage users from forcing the cut.

I don't think it is just shopsmith, I have seen other newer scroll saws that don't have the guides.
The trick is to only push the work as fast as the blade can cut, if the blade is bending, you are pushing to hard.

100% right. I guess it is just me and old school methods. Have done a lot of scroll saw work over the years on different saws but this is my first go with a Shopsmith. I let my boy have my AMT saw which was a super good saw but I opted for the larger table on the Shopsmith. Need to get the speed up to where it is supposed to be yet as using it stand alone. Using a 1/4hp 1750 rpm motor but had it running way to slow. Figured out the saw makes one stroke with ever 2 revolutions of the shaft/pulley. Need to get a 4" on the motor and 2.5 on the saw should get me in the ball park of 800 + spm.
