Raised Planter Bed

Post by WoodFrog »

My wife was super excited and supportive of me getting a Shopsmith. I figured there had to be a catch...the first project she commissioned me to build was a raised bed planter. She found a design by Janet Fox she liked on this site by Ana White.

I got it built, see pictures below! I left a bit of a gap on the corners to attach small posts if I end up needing to put some wire around it to keep critters out, otherwise identical to the original design.

I used Fir posts and Cedar on the rest of it.

Very nice. Dome of clear or opaque plastic will give you a hot house or cold frame for starting plants or to extend the growing season.

Your wife should enjoy working with that.

Our planter boxes are not raised but I think we are getting to the point that we may need to. Also, I notice that this design leaves room underneath for storage of accessories that may be handy to keep nearby. Another reason to consider a raised bed.

Thanks guys! Yeah, good idea on the plastic to make a little mini greenhouse. I will have to look into the plastic. Are you talking a thin and flexible plastic film or like harder sheet of plastic w/ some structure to it?

I have seen people use just a clear or white thin plastic sheet (3mm drop cloth sheet), acrylic sheets, glass, greenhouse twinwall panels and corrugated polycarbonate panels. It all depends on how fancy you want to get and what you have on hand. Cheap, quick and easily repaired/replaced is bent pvc or bamboo covered in plastic sheeting. Easy to roll up the sides when it gets warm to vent the heat too. I saw a fancy one someplace with greenhouse twinwall panels and automatic vents like a large greenhouse that I thought was overkill on a raised bed like yours. An other one I saw the person had used old house windows to make a greenhouse cover for it.

Make a simple frame and staple plastic sheet to it. make it removable and you can get seeds started pretty early. I did it with earthboxes years ago, but the same thing here. Have fun!
