I acquired a M500 not 505, 510 or 520 just for clarification. It came with a drum sander and various paper. After looking on Shopsmith's website, I see that there is a drum sanding package for the M500 and one for the other models. What is the difference between the two and what prevents a user from using the Mark 500 drum sander on a Mark 520 setup or any of the other models? Is there anything unique about the paper? I would ass u me that there is nothing unique about the paper. The only difference I see between two drums of the same size is one is threaded on both sides and the other is only threaded on one side. I only have one drum that was used for the Mark 500. The other sanding materials I have came from a guy who upgraded from a 510 to a 520 system. The following quote is from the Shopsmith website.

"2-1/4" Shopsmith drum sander is 3" high with a rubber expansive drum that can be attached quickly to the spindle on your Mark 7 or Mark V"

The package includes a table insert. The 500 insert is different from the 510,520 insert.

Ok, that makes sense to me. Am I correct in saying that the only difference between the two packages is the table insert? Thanks in advance

Yes, the only difference between the two packages it the table insert. The picture for the online catalog only shows the 505/510/520 and Mark 7 table insert. The Sanding Drum itself has not changed since late 1953 when the set screw was changed from a 1/4" to a 5/16" set screw. Anyone who has a older Sanding Drum with a brittle, cracked or just plain hard rubber sleeve can buy a new one from Shopsmith and make their Sanding Drum like new. The part number is 503009. I have replaced several from the Model 10's I have restored.

If you have an issue getting a table insert for a Mark V, you can also make one from hardboard that will work fine.

You are are correct, inserts are pretty easy to make,
However, I am not sure what "harris2020" is here for, all of their posts are non Shopsmith specific, and are written in Engrish. So I am a bit suspicious of their intent.
