Hello Forum,

I I have 2 Model 510 SS System. One i have dedicated to lathe and some Boring, etc function and the second one has been shortened to do drill press, Bandsaw, saw, etc. I have a SS Planer that will not fit well on the shorty so I have decided to build a cart for it and have it powered by its own 1/2, 3/4 or 1 Hp motor. Anyone done anything like this that can give me some pointers. I have already built the cart and have 2 possible motors to drive it.

What hp motor will be the best for it?
I also saw somewhere before that the pulley on the planer and the one on the motor are not the same size. Help!!!
Do I have to find a way yo guild a way for the motor to use its weight as a belt tensioner or does it matter? I noticed that the motor on the Power Station does not a tensioner.

The power stand that was offered originally to mount the SS mount planer had a 1 1/2HP motor. The SS stand alone Pro Planer with a cast iron table had a 1 3/4 HP motor.

Yes the pulleys are different size. SS also changed/upgraded the sizes at some point. My Pro Planer has the upgraded pulleys but I don't know the sizes off the top of my head. I am sure someone will chime in with the new sizes. If not I will remove the belt cover and measure mine.

Yes you have to provide a way to tension the belt. Motor weight is a good way. On the SS power Stands (NOT the Power Station) the 4 motor mounting bolts are used to raise or lower the motor to adjust the tension.

The Power Station uses an internal adjustment for belt tension. It is a Reevs variable speed drive like the SS head stock and works very differently than a simple 2 pulley motor and tool drive.

The pulley sizes were changed when the motor size was increased from 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 hp. The larger motor allowed a speed increase of the blades.

This has been said before but my understanding is different. The motor size was never changed. There were two different stands. The one that came with the Pro Planer always had a 1 3/4HP motor. That stand was only available as a complete unit with the planer. It is black.

There was a stand sold to mount the MK V mount planer on. It had a 1 1/2HP motor and did until they stopped making it. It is grey.

As I remember (it's been a long time ago ) My Pro Planer came with the original pulleys. When SS came out with the upgrade pulley set I bought one and installed it on my Pro Planer.

Maybe someone with the appropriate catalogs can confirm this or correct my recollection.

But pulley change makes so much sense with a motor power increase.

That is a 20% increase.

Power increase from 1 1/2 to 1 3/4 is 16%.

Power stand vs Pro I have to accept yer recollection.

However, a pulley 'upgrade' with an already more powerful motor because ???? Why was not a larger pulley already the norm for a pro????

I am assuming ONLY the motor pulley was changed.

Possibly, I don't remember, the pulley upgrade was only for the Pro Planer and they were just offering the pulley it should of had from the beginning.

As for it only being the motor pulley,, I think you are correct. I just don't remember for sure.

Thanks Guys for your input . Then it brings up the following question for me then:

• If any, what are the differences between the planer on the Planer Pro and the MK V Model? Just want to make sure that if i attach a stronger motor to the MK V type that it will not hurt anything.

• I have a 1 3/4 Hp motor also and can use that. So as far as I am understanding, the motor pulley is either 5 or 6 inches. What should the size of the pulley on the Planer be?

I think I saw a pic a while back that looks like the planer has a 5in pulley and the motor has a 2in pulley or maybe that was reversed. Clarity please.

My SS mount planer came on a cart made by the previous owner. It is kind of jammed in right now, so I can't get to the other end to see the motor or pulleys.

The differences AIUI are:
1) cast iron vs clad aluminum table(lighter for the SS mount).
2) feed motor speed range(minimally relevant IMO)
3) color(totally irrelevant)

I do not know of any thing that would limit the motor choice(1.75 on my to do list)

Hello Forum. I have 2 motors that came from old table saws. One is a very old 3/4 Hp motor and a newer 1.5 HP Motor. Both are 3450 rpm, will that work or do I need one that turns at a lower rpm? Thanks
