Carriage lock not locking

Hello all, just a pretty simple question for you today. When i mount my lathe rest the carriage lock does not want to lock very well. I seems okay with the table installed. I did pull the geared pieces out and cleaned them of any compacted sawdust and it helped a little bit. Am I missing something?
Thanks, Phil

Even more odd, if I mount the lather rest on the wrong side it locks down pretty tight.

Finally got it figured out. the previous owner had obviously taken the locking mechanism apart and failed to put it back together properly. The washer that goes between the hand crank, over the square shaft and the locking mechanism was missing. Is this a square hole washer or will a normal half inch fender washer work there? The part number is 171 but in the parts list is listed simply as a washer.
Not sure what the post from India was all about but it was not from me!
Thanks - Phil

Which table system do you have?

Never mind, only the 510/520 carriage has a 171 that is a washer. Mine looks like a regular 1/2" flat washer, round hole. Dimensions are ID 0.532, OD 1.063 Thickness 0.087. None of those appear to be critical. A very large OD might interfere on the casting.

Thanks, I'm sorry i neglected to mention the system, a 510 it is. I have a large split washer in for the moment as that is all i had on hand. It is working a whole lot better than without one!

Ise cornfuzed.
I assume the op misstated that he was having a problem with the CARRIAGE lock.
I presume from the description etc. that the problem has to do with the table height lock.
As for front slip/rear tight, I would look for what is restricting the front lock from moving towards the rear.
Since he has a 'crank' I assume he does NOT have a M5 or 500.
Regardless of the hardware, The wingnut must cause pressure to be applied to the large od front lock/pinion gear.

The inner washer needs to be large enough to slip over the square shaft.
The outer washer allows the wing nut to NOT run out of threads before locking takes place. I would NOT be using a split lock washer there.

Got the correct 1/2 inch washer and all is well with the world once again. I swear, some people should not be allowed around machinery.
