Re: Five Quick Tips for Gluing
What a great video. Maybe you can give some advice on which glue is better to bond wooden parts? I am interested in fast-drying and non-toxic glues as I'll make all kinds of wooden toys for my children.pcd7326 wrote:

Not just for chair repair, but for many applications. Nick strength tests most adhesives that are popular (and not so popular) and available on the market today:

Restoring a chair presents special problems. The wooden surfaces are covered with old glue and the joints are loose, making it difficult to create a strong bond. And not only must you reassemble the chair parts, the adhesive you use must fill the voids in the loose joints. We test several readily-available glues for both their strength and gap-filling properties. We also investigate several materials made just for chair repair that claim to secure the joints either by filling the gaps or swelling the wood to fit.

Re: Nick Engler's Workshop Companion youtube channel & website
No surprise that the epoxy had the highest strength.
What surprised me was the relatively low strength of the hide glue -- especially considering that antique furniture, including, chairs were put together with hide glue and stayed tight for decades or even hundreds of years.
But I have a hypothesis. As I understand it, hide glue strength is very dependent on two factors: gram strength and using the proper amount of water. I assume Nick knows how to mix hide glue properly. I just wish he had told us the gram strength. I'm guessing this was not a high gram strength hide glue.
Hope Shipwright, who was our resident hide glue evangelist checks this out and offer his opinion.

Scrapers and Scraping
Nick Engler's Workshop Companion
Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ay6kXarG7oc
Nick Engler shows two ways to sharpen scrapers -- the traditional method using files and burnishers, and the "easy" method using files only. He also explains how to sharpen curved scrapers, using a drill bit to create a sharp edge. Finally, he demonstrates how to scrape wood, achieving in just a few seconds a smooth surface equivalent of sanding with 120# or 150# sandpaper.
