Jointer fence alignment help

Slowly adding to my SS Mark V and learning along the way, I have recently been lucky to pick up a Pro Planer in excellent condition for a great price, along with a jointer which was also a good deal. After getting the jointer cleaned up and checking the blades, which were in great shape and properly positioned, I realized that the fence misaligns when tightened down. The outfeed side rises and slides back at least 1/2 cm when the fence is secured into place. I can't seem to find any info about adjustments for this, nor any info about what part may be causing the problem. There is a part (Jointer Fence Tilt Quadrant - 502651) which is described as being a potential solution, but I'm not sure. Would any of you have thoughts? Thanks so much for your help!

This is all normal. When you tighten the fence it will be pulled back against the rail so it will naturally will be moved back a bit. It also squares the quadrant to the rail which causes the out feed end to raise slightly.

The out feed end of the fence must be above the out feed table. The fence is attached to the in feed table. When you lower the in feed table to adjust the depth of cut there has to be clearance so the fence does not contact the out feed table.

You have discovered the ability to clamp the fence horizontily across the infeed bed. You did that by rotating the knob while pulling OUT away from the bed. Yes the fence rises slightly OFF the infeed table when tightened. Tis a good idea to NOT mimmick a gorilla when tightening.

Now push in on the knob and loosen the fence angle nut. The fence will be loosey goosey. There is a small stop that positions the fence vertical to the table(and another for 45°). There is a small set screw to fine tune each stop.

Not obvious but the knob allows control of both functions.

P.S. Not often a 'doc/surgeon' monkeys with this thing.

Thanks to to both of you. What about the fence angling back so that it is no longer square right to left? In other words, the work piece will cross the outfeed table 1/2-1cm farther back than along the infeed table.

That does not affect anything. If you are face jointing a board you don't even need the fence. The angle of the stock going over the cutter head makes no difference. The only thing that matters is the fence is 90 degrees vertically to the tables. That way when you edge joint the edge is 90 degrees to the face because you hold the face tight against the fence.

Thanks -- never really thought of it that way; just used to having things "line up" squarely because it feels right!

I think we need a pix of that 1/2 - 1 cm of bias.

A close up pix of the back side of the quadrant where ii slides on the bar might be enlightening. It is possible that a gorilla has already done his dastardly deed.

With the lock loose the left to right movement of the out feed end of the fence is the same as the the front to back movement or the raising of the out feed end when the lock is tightened. The tables are not a reference point for left right movement and it doesn't matter anyway.

As long as the fence can be set vertical to the tables (or any other angle) and stay there nothing else matters.

Yes the fence CAN be skewed when edge jointing, but it SHOULDNT be skewed significantly. Not sure what that 1/2 -1 cm is over what length? From front of infeed to back of outfeed tables, = no problem. From back of infeed table to front of outfeed able = howcum?

OK -- here are 3 pics which might help
