Hey Tommy, yes, I’ve done that many times, and it the set screw hadn’t been so rounded-off I would have done that. You may have noticed that after the miter gauge was out of the table I drove the wrench several inches in and attempted to turn the set screw, but to no avail. The hex recess was just too far gone for even a fresh wrench. Scott

Since 1954 insets in the main table of Shopsmith multipurpose tools have had a unique shape that allows them to be quickly adjusted flush with the transition from and to the table itself. Why don't other table saws have this feature? Because you only feed stock one direction on a table saw (Unless you are Izzy Swan!) and it's an expensive feature to produce.

Scott,

A great overview of how the Table Inserts have been designed. Also, a good reminder of how to properly install them since I know I don't always think about that when changing Inserts on the Table.

Was the Table Insert for the 510/505 having been designed to go to the end of the table an idea borrowed from the Mark 2 or simply a coincidence? Surprisingly even the Mark 2 Table Insert is bowed and the nubs are actually in the Table recess. Just some things I noticed since I am in the process of restoring the two Mark 2's I have.

I think it is a matter of $$$ since it only requires rounding the leading end.

Grinding Wheels on your Shopsmith? SURE! Grinding Wheel Guard 1 & 2

Shopsmith Inc. marketed two different versions of the "Grinding Wheel Guard" (GWGI & GWGII) and for quick stock removal a bonded abrasive wheel (grinding wheel) is tough to beat. In this video I'll show you the difference between the two guards and show you how to set them up.

✅ Thanks to Damion Smith for hooking me up with the Grinding Wheel Guard II used in this video. Find his Shopsmith items for sale on Facebook Marketplace, or better yet, join the "Shopsmith Sales Group" where Damion often posts his items.

Here are links to a few of the products I used or discussed in this video:
🟢 My favorite 9" long T-handle "Shopsmith Toolbox" 5/32" Hex Wrench: https://amzn.to/3sm3NcJ
🟢 Though they are in limited supply, here's a link to the grinding wheels that fit the Shopsmith Grinding Wheel Guards: https://amzn.to/3xle2Dq Look for 5" diameter x 3/4" thick wheels.

🟢 As of this recording Shopsmith is not offering the GWGII for sale, but they so have the arbors; https://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/ite ... tem=555302

I have the Grinding Wheel Guard II so I didn't know what the difference was between the two. Thanks Scott.

Buy the way I couldn't find the link for the video in the post above and had to look for it. I found it at

I no longer have a bench grinder but occasionally need the use of one. The GWG would be a good option for me and what I need. I did look on Ebay and also Shopsmith's website, but no luck there. Maybe I missed it in the video, but how long has it been since SS stopped selling these?

Nice video, Scott, and quite an interesting attachment for the Mark V.

I wasn't that long ago they discontinued it. In June of 2015 I ordered one. That part of the order ended up on back order for several months. I had inquired as to the delay and they said they were having trouble getting parts made for it. Finally I cancelled that part of the order and found a used Grinding Wheed Guard II that I purchased. I haven't seen them available in the Shopsmith catalog since.

I did a little poking around on the cached version of the Shopsmith site on the Wayback Machine and noted that the last occurrence of this page, which featured the Grinding Wheel Guard II was cached on Jan 25, 2021: https://web.archive.org/web/20210125142 ... lguard.htm I don't know if they actually fulfilled orders placed during that time, but the next time they crawled the site, that page was deleted. I'd be curious to know if anyone received one during this period. Scott
