βœ… SHOP NOTES: I'm at WorkBenchCon this weekend and having a great time playing with new tools and learning from suppliers and Youtube content creators. So far the coolest tool I've discovered is the new portable pocket hole jig from Kreg that makes drilling pocket holes on wide sheet stock (plywood, melamine, etc.) a breeze! It's available in a couple kits, including one kit that allows it to be mounted to a base for use in narrow stock, such as for making face frames. Check out a couple of them at Amazon:

🟒 This is the basic, hand-held version of the Kreg 520Pro: https://amzn.to/3HldZJh
🟒 This version of the Kreg 520Pro includes the "Docking Station": https://amzn.to/3taRUIt
🟒 I suppose this is the "Whole Enchilada" version! It includes the Kreg 520PRO Pocket-Hole Jig and the Docking Station AND a SK04 Starter Pocket Hole Screw Kit: https://amzn.to/3t9qG54

βœ… SHOP NOTES: That's right, your Shopsmith has a hair trigger that ideally you'll be able to avoid, but if your quill return spring breaks or if the depth gauge gets out of alignment, you might not have a choice but to tempt fate. Ok, I'm being overly dramatic. Yes, you do need to approach this carefully, but it's totally doing about and you've got this!

βœ… SHOP NOTES: The Shopsmith power coupler is been the driving bandsaws, jointers and more since the 1950's, and though it's gone through several changes the product has been pretty much dialed-in for over 50 years. Yes, it's a "weak link", but it's totally by design, and oh, what a design it is!

My first two SPT couplers came with a '57 I bought in the early 80's. I broke one when I put my old bandsaw (with straight tube mounts) on a newer machine, IMO due to poor hub alignment (aka operator error :o ). The other I still use, I would guess both are original from late 50's. Both had that translucent look, I'm not sure when that changed.

While there is no doubt these will break at some amount of torque, I'm skeptical of that being an intentional safety feature. What hazard would be mitigated? The design has been the same since 3/4 HP machines. No change for a 50% power increase to 1-1/8 HP. And no change for PowerPro, which SS asserts produces twice the power at all speeds. Thinking mostly of the bandsaw and jointer, I don't see where a hard torque limit is a safety feature. And I suspect we'd be breaking them all the time if they were designed to break under conditions that the early machines could produce. Has anyone else broken one of these where safety was a factor? Or even broken one by exceeding the torque limit? What sort of conditions, and on what machine?

Note - I've read a thread or discussion where members felt PowerPros were contributing to an increased break rate for couplers. I don't think many felt this had to do with more power.

David, My oldest coupler isn't from the '50's, but it is from 1980. It's been dropped onto the concrete floor of my workshop, kicked across the floor, has had a wood board set down on it, and I'm sure other "abuse"; more times than I can count, and all by accident, of course. But it refuses to die.

As far as safety of the machine; I've never stalled any of my Shopsmith mechanical headstocks with a SPT and the power coupler in use. Only while in table saw mode, once. So I can't say for sure torque would be a defiant cause of failure with any of the SPT's for me personally, except for maybe with the Mark mounted planer. I own and use one, but the situation hasn't happened where I've taken a extremely heavy cut, or hit a foreign object that was embedded in a board, or a extremely hard knot being planed. If it did fail do to that sort of operation, then I could see it being a safety factor to help protect the operator from personal injury. I've seen planer kickback first hand (not on a Shopsmith planer), and it will make your heart skip a beat or few.

Aside from maybe the button bearing on the control sheave, or wearing a area on the belts and control sheaves; I'm not sure what other components in a mechanical headstock could be damaged by a sudden jolted stall other than the motor. Like I mentioned when I stalled one of mine while in the table saw mode; no internal damage occurred that I'm aware of, and I was quick to flip the power switch off to keep from damaging the motor.

Coupler Controversy - It was always about the SPRING!
