Russ, thanks for background on the last availability of the GWG. I'll have to keep checking the used market and maybe I'll find one.

By searching on the Shopsmith web site I found this link to a grinding wheel guard, 516088. however the price looks very low, so it may just be an orphan listing that they missed disabling

Part Number 516088 is the main casting reference number 1 for the Guard as shown in the manual I have for it. My manual is a PDF version I found somewhere for it dated 12/90. As is common, I didn't get a printed Manual with it when I bought mine used. Shopsmith still has some repair/replacement parts for it still in stock. Other parts show up as available too. Two parts that are not available that are specific to the Grinding Wheel Guard II are the Cover ref # 18 and the Shield Bar ref # 8.

Russ, I lucked out and found the complete GWG II, with some grinding wheels. It was listed on Craigslist in VA Beach (too far to drive). I contacted the owner to see about having my buddy who lives in Norfolk meet up with him, pay, and get the item for me. By the time we finished our call the seller offered to send it via USPS, and I have a check in the mail to him. Easy! Tracking says that it should arrive here on Monday. :)

My GWG II arrived today, date of manufacture 02 26 91. The included manual has a date of 12/90, so it's probably the same version as the one Russ mentioned. Also included is the knife sharpening accessory #555301 with instructions.

That's great! I'm editing part 2 of my two-part series on the GWG, so look for that tomorrow. Scott

In part 2 of this two-parter on the SS GWGII I mounted the wheel to the arbor, dressed the wheel and actually made some sparks sharpening a low quality bench chisel that my sister has been using as a can opener. Good times. Scott

FYI, in case anyone ever needs the reference, the manual that came with my GWG II has a parts diagram and parts list.

Casters, casters and casters!

Some time back I replaced the stock Shopsmith casters with what they promote as an "Improved" 3" caster. The regret was pretty much instantaneous, so in this video I not only replace those "ungraded" casters, but also install a complete new set of casters on a Shopsmith Power Station. Since Shopsmith has relaunched their classic "SPT Power Stand" https://bit.ly/39bcySK if you wind-up grabbing one you'll probably also want to get a set of the matching casters: https://www.shopsmith.com/ownersite/cat ... asters.htm

🟢 These are the upgrade "Econo" 2" caster wheels that I like and reccomend: https://amzn.to/3QOrK9q
