I'm experimenting with putting a thin contrasting wood strip at an angle through a turning blank. Clamping the three glued pieces causes them to slide past each other. I came up with putting clamping blocks at two corners and that helped a lot. But I'm thinking there's got to be an easier way.

How do you do it?

When you cut the turning block, do a non-through cut, leaving just enough material to serve as a flexible hinge. Thickness your wood strips to equal the width of the saw kerf. Then when you glue them into the kerf, that “hinge” will keep everything from sliding about, and your newly-segmented blank will end up nice and square.

If you’ve already cut the blank apart, you can approximate the wooden flex hinge by applying some strips of tape to its sides, before clamping.

ah - thanks Hobbyman. I see they're using V corners to do it. So I guess I'm thinking right.

What a great idea. However, my block was taller than I could cut through on the tablesaw, even in two cuts. It just squeaked into my 6" bandsaw. But along that line, maybe gluing or screwing strips on the side would do the same thing.

Based on some of the other references, I just built a jig to deal put a contrasting strips in my 10x10 5 inch thick blanks.

Took me a while to figure out I'd have better luck gluing this up while the blank was still square and containing the whole square on all sides so it can't slip.

I'm anxious to try it out, but waiting for a new motor pulley to arrive next week. I'd sure rather be turning and cutting wood than repairing a broken machine part.

Basically, he clamps the sides to keep the beveled ends from creeping.
