Looks like no more new tools until Nov.

I had a few more tools on this years budget but now they have to move to next year. My small brick pc that mounts behind the monitor died. No life at all. I check the power supply and pulled it apart to check the power to the board and that was good. On an outside chance the battery had gone I pulled it apart enough to check it. Way to compact to try and work on so.........
It was pretty slow anyway, but was fine for reading mail and the like but no HP for graphics or CAD work. And in fact I have been thinking of replacing it but not until 2021. I guess that was asking too much.
I have liked the Dell XPS13 and the Microsoft Surface Pro 7 but the Surface Pro 7 has some battery life issues and seems MS has problems with software upgrades, and the new version 8 was put off until next year, leaving me with the Dell.
Should be here in a few days so we will see if all that money was worth it. I got the i7 with 16GB memory, Irus Plus Graphics, touch screen so it should work fine with graphics programs and maybe even re-coding some video.
The bad news was the money which had to come from somewhere, namely my tool budget. Just have to build thing in sketchup I guess.

I have a desktop with similar processor. Mine runs Linux, and with only 4gig of ram, everything is pretty much instantaneous when you click on something. Firefox opens in about a second . My Office suite likewise loads in about 1 second. All the rest of the software is smaller and loads too fast to see.
Yours with 16gig of ram should perform well even with Windows. Now you keep your fingers crossed that it lasts until it is so outdated that you want to replace it years down the road.

I had no idea how out dated my pc's had become. I now have the dell xps13 with just about everything I have on my other main system and it is much faster on the dell. The screen is of course smaller but I can use the main systems screen from the dell after I get a small switch to add to the video stream. But that is for another time.
I liked everything except that I went with windows 10 home rather then pro. This is the first time I have had a 10 home version and found I missed some of the pro features so today I upgraded to pro. Added $100 + tax to the cost but that is how it goes.
I have now decided it is time to upgrade my main system. I will figure out what I want and start buying the parts a few a month until I have enough to put it together in say Jan or so.
I had to look back to see when I put the present one together, looks like 2014, hard to believe it has been that long. In my younger days it was every couple of years. This will how ever will likely be my last build unless it isn't and then it will be because something failed that could not be fixed.
I plan to spend this month deciding on what I want. Then start orders in November.
Now I'm glad the little pc gave up and forced me to upgrade. Going to see if the msata drive is still OK from that and put it in a usb enclosure. Memory is not going to be compatible with anything I have will lose that with the little pc I guess. Everything else was usb and I can migrate it to the new laptop.

We have a company here called PCLaptope. They sell laptops and desktops ( a long story ). They are custom built with high end off the shelf components. Their desktops are guaranteed for life, parts, labor and software fixes. Their laptops are not guaranteed for parts but are for software and labor for software. I have had 4 laptops from them and when I had a hardware problem it was for free. Coded it customer satisfaction.
Yes, they are a little more expensive but the warante is iron clad. I have been dealing with them for about 20 years with absolutely no problem. Take your computer in and they fix it, no charge. We have 3 desk tops and one lap top.

I will check them out. I am planning to get a new laptop soon and until now I was looking at a Dell Precision 3551 mobile workstation.
